I'm liking the forums more and more, but the threads are pretty limited to just the show. Having long been a mod at other forums, I think this community could really benefit from some type of Community Chat forum. So that we can chat about things other than the show. Everything from what you're expecting from ODST to a favorite OCRemix thread.
What do you think?

Well, what I normally say has already been said. We could do with a General Discussion subforum.
Why would I need to come to this thread?
...
Yes I know I did.

Darn it, if only I had saw this earlier. Then I could've sat on the sidelines with Brainiac while waiting for Swish.

Well you still got in your gratuitous postcount padding after the fact, so what are you complaining about?
I kid, I kid.
Terraguy
02-03-2009, 09:51 PM
Aw, come on. I'm not here to boost my post count....
(Only 14 more to go!)
On the other hand, Swish's love for a General Discussion forum is so well known, it has to be said.
Myrph

Yup! I'd agree with all the above...
It'd be nice to see it suddenly materialise though! ;p

While I discuss generally on other forums, it would be nice to have such a forum at VGL. :D

ah, so I guess I just stepped an ongoing issue...
But, now there is another voice in the fight for discussion equality!
...perhaps a song is in order to express our feelings on the subject.
...And a promotional poster:

More pleasantly surprised ;pp
Makes a change from coming back and finding several hundred spam posts ;pp
If curiously Communist.
Sorry, I never really intended for it to look that communist. I liked the red color, and the whole grungy dark-red theme seemed to work well, so I decided to go with it. It just happened to come out so communist-looking. I realize that the star beside the text didn't help at all, but I needed some kind of symbol that would automatically work with any theme, and the star seemed to fulfill that purpose.
Here's a less-communist version: GeneralDiscussions_blue.jpg (http://pb3d.net/mattspace/GeneralDiscussions_blue.jpg)
Anyway, glad you guys like the poster, lol...
Brainiac
02-06-2009, 08:24 PM
Blue is better than the Big Brother/Tovarisch Tallarico version, but how about a version in VGL green? That would seem even more apropos.
Terraguy
02-06-2009, 08:40 PM
Frankly, "Lord Tallarico" scares me a bit. :p
Personally, I find "Tallarikov" to be both disturbing and amusing :p
Here's the green version: GeneralDiscussions_green02.jpg (http://pb3d.net/mattspace/GeneralDiscussions_green02.jpg)
And on top of that, some propaganda for the General Discussion cause :D

I can only take this as a personal insult to my charisma. Not a word when I bring it up, but as soon as Link89 says something, community chat! Posters! Oooh, Link89, write me a song!
If you all love Link89 so much why don't you marry him/her?
By which I mean I'm looking forward to that song.

I would like to present exhibit A on why we need a General Chat section of the boards.
Not anymore.
Yeesh, now we really are being postmonkeys.
With a General Chat section, posting for postings sake such as this could be confined to the appropriate section out of the way of the information people are looking for. Postmonkeys such as this could be in an environment where they are able to post as much as they are able and live happy, care free lives. We need to protect these postmonkeys from extinction caused by the destruction of their natural habitat. This General Chat would benefit all users of the boards, people would be able to find the information they need and the local wildlife would still be protected. This is not a problem that will resolve itself in time, we need to act now or, I fear, we may act too late.
Brainiac
02-13-2009, 07:03 PM
Ook, ook!
<translated from postmonkey speech> Here, here!

I'd definitely say lawful neutral, as opposed to the other two! I think our presence would definitely tis the scales towards chaotic!
And terraguy, these are three of the nine alignments a character can be in dungeons and dragons! The others being chaotic good, lawful good and neutral good and chaotic evil, lawful evil and neutral evil.
Brainiac
02-17-2009, 11:24 PM
Yeah, what Myrph said. Though Neutral Good and Neutral Evil are often referred to as "True" Good/Evil since they exist in balance between Order and Disorder.

So that makes you 9 years older than me! I must admit though, as you can probably tell from my age, that I wasn't a part of the original following and only joined the bandwagon after discovering the video games (Pool of Radiance, Neverwinter Nights etc.) based on the concept, although I do try and dabble in the 'pen & paper' gaming over the internet when I can!
Must admit I'm not happy about the new incarnation though, the removal of the Bard as a playable class in 4th Edition will be something I will never forgive them for... But thats not a discussion I'd like to get into here ;pp We'd need a General Discussion board in which to do that!

Yeah I know. I tried to mitigate that slightly with this thread (http://videogameslive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14624), but it can only do so much.
What's a single thread when you could have a whole subforum? Ideally I think general games music chat should have its own subforum rather than shared with the off topic stuff we're campaigning for here, but whatever, we need somewhere where we can justifiably say something that isn't phrased in a question relating to VGL.
Brainiac
03-02-2009, 07:49 PM
I have another reason for a Gen-Chat forum. We need someplace to put in incredibly funny parodies of the infamy that is old-school gaming localization.
For example, from one 1337ROX @ GameFAQs:
"What is a bard?" <throws harp> "A miserable little pile of spoons!"
Tell me that isn't funny worthy of its own forum. :D
Swish

oh, and an essential for any gaming forum is a completed game hall of fame, so that every time we beat a game, we can brag and give our review so that others can try them.

Yeah, the movie itself seems kinda lame, sorry, but after the monstrousity that was the Street Fighter movie of 1994, I have confidence saying...no live-action Street Fighter movie will ever represent the storyline as well as the games. Besides the storyline of Street Fighter isn't really that in-depth.
But maybe that's because I didn't really play the game.
You don't need to play the games to know that the movie is going to be awful.

Boll is a legend. You should watch his non-game-related movies. Blackwoods is one of the most hilariously bad thrillers ever committed to film.
Also, I've not seen The Legend of Chun-Li yet. I'm going to wait till it comes out on DVD so I can get away with MSTing it with my mates like I normally do with videogame movies.
There's hardly a plot to ruin in Street Fighter. The anime films are fairly faithful adaptations, and every single one follows the following synopsis:
1) The bad guy is trying to steal the fighting prowess of the world's best martial artists using some bizarre technological macguffin.
2) For some reason they need Ryu's Dark Side of the Force Satsui no Hadou abilities (unless it's Street Fighter II the Animated Movie, in which case they hadn't yet retconned that in, and instead it's just because he's really good), but this doesn't stop them kidnapping or otherwise analysing the skills of other fighters apparently just for the hell of it.
3) All the other major good guys get together to try to find Ryu before the bad guy does. Ryu is being all nomadic and broody somewhere dusty and remote.
4) Ryu is found by both and initially cannot control his Satsui no Hado.
5) Ryu has another go at fighting the bad guy. This time he utilises the Light Side of the Force, and wins. However, he's not sure that he can do it again without loads more training, and he leaves for a nomadic life somewhere dustier and more remote, so that he can brood some more.

I managed to re-create a better quality version. Ah well, too late now. Unless it magically transforms or something... :p
I hope you pm'ed Myrph.
And the only difference is that the score is 3-6 in BurnUnit's avatar.
The score in the Classic Arcade Medley is 7-6.

You think now there isn't a ton of discussion here? You should've seen a couple of months ago. There was no discussion due to spam bots spamming the forum.

A bit dead here, no?
Everyone at a loss for things to say, hm?
Need a General Discussion subforum, right?
Still, we can't expect Tommy to come on here and approve that while GDC is still going on. Busy, busy times.
So.
To pass the time, what's everyone playing at the moment?
Persona 4 for me mainly.

Going through Resident Evil 5 on co-op right now and also Star Ocean: The Last Hope. I'm also throwing in CoD: WaW just to play nazi zombies.

Is that so? Most of what I've heard has been right down the middle. Not that bad, but not that good either. I watched some videos of it on Youtube and honestly wasn't that impressed. I'm still curious though.

To the former, if you need a hand unlocking the Mognet extras (like the Onion Knight), PM me.
To the latter, it's not that Judgment is bad as much as it's not good. Plus some of the "humor" kinda falls flat and seems stupid.

I think the two major criticizms are:
1. The graphics
2. The control scheme
My solutions:
1. You can turn on the smoothing. It makes it slightly blurrier, but it does make a big difference
2. I don't think it's actually too bad. But if waggling is not your style, you can always use a Classic Controller or GameCube controller.

Yeah, the Ghost Ship Chart is on Diamond Steppe Island, which is right in the middle of the furthest West and Southernmost but one map square. It's been ages since I played that game. Do your own GameFAQs search next time.
I spent last night belatedly going through about a third of Gears of War 2 on co-op. Ah, I'd missed the good old days of MSTing crap cutscenes over Live headsets.
But Persona 4 still owns my soul.

Love doing that. It's some of the most fun you can have in gaming, in my opinion. A friend of mine and I riffed Dynasty Warriors 6 and then did the same with Resident Evil 5 on co-op.

Someone needs to watch Unskippable (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/unskippable).
But Persona 4 still owns my soul.
You're not the only one, I'm sure. P3 and P4 are excellent games. The rumor is since they did so well, Atlus is considering finally given non-Japanese gamers both parts of P2; they're already working on a PSP remake of the original Persona.
Swish

Someone already watches Unskippable.
Someone thinks they started out a bit weak, and someone finds their repeated misuse of the term "stock footage" incredibly frustrating, but someone has really liked a lot of their more recent riffing.
Dunno who though.

Someone knows how to be incredibly insufferable by continuing usage of third-person nomenclature.
Of course, said someone is British, so being insufferable is par for the course... <ducks various thrown objects>
:p
Myrph
03-31-2009, 05:35 PM
One is utterly shocked that there are those who are loathe to use the third person. One finds that it is the most pleasurable verb form to both think and speak in, something one must admit to being guilty of.
That being said, one would wonder if it would be worth attempting to glean a copy of Persona 4 (this being as one recently saw a copy of said game in a local game outlet).
Swish
03-31-2009, 05:38 PM
I was only using the word "someone" because that's how Brainiac referred to me.
Also, yes it would be worth it. I'd go off on one about how good it is, but I'm saving that for a blog post once I'm a bit further in (I've only played a mere 28 hours so far).

03-31-2009, 08:04 PM
Actually, I'm curious as to how much P4 owns your soul, Swish. Does it own it enough that you'll get the Persona PSP remake despite the old-school Persona games being a fair bit different from the new-school ones?

Nothing hugely memorable has happened recently Sean, unless anyone else remembers anything... Still haven't got a general discussion board yet though...

A quick roundup of recent events:
- Tommy still hasn't popped up to give the go-ahead for a General Discussion subforum, though is currently presumably rather busy. That's not really an event, rather a continued non-event.
- Terraguy got banned for a day as a joke.
- Myrph's girlfriend told him, "We're doing it round your house because I don't want to get paint everywhere in my new place."
See? It is funnier out of context.
Myrph
04-02-2009, 05:19 PM
You really were determined to take that one out of context weren't you! I agree though, it is funnier when taken out of context.
Also the whole deal with the Terraguy getting banned thing was due to stuff happening with Terraguy, such that he didn't want to be distracted by VGL and getting banned was the easiest way to do it.
In other news, Woo 400 ;p

Tsk, tsk. Improper application of the retort. I've got to at least make an insult first.
Hmmmm, which to use...perhaps...
"Give up now, or I'll crush you like a grape!"
"You're a disgrace to your species, you're so undignified!"
"My tongue is sharper than any sword!"
..and one of my personal favorites...
"Hey, look over there!"

"I would if it would stop your WINE-ing"
(No fair, that's one of Captain Rottingham's insults) "At least mine can be identified!"
(And one of the sword-master's insults!) "First you better stop waving it around like a feather duster!"
And brilliant choice ;pp

Damn, the second one I can't remember (Its been too long since I've played MI1)
but the rest:
"I'd be in trouble if you ever used them!"
"I would but you were always running away!"
