After having heard the show, I searched the CD on Facebook at home, not wanting to pay the price for the CD at the show. To my shock, I didn't find Metroid, Legend of Zelda, Sonic, or many of my other favs from the show! I think that there should be another CD showcasing other songs by popular vote of the public, along with some personal choices of your own. Please consider this option, as I am (and many others are according to profit charts) an exclusive Nintendo system purchaser, and would very much like to see some of the music to the games that I actually play.

Well, a second volume has been confirmed. The problem is that Nintendo won't allow any of their music to be released on a soundtrack that has music by other companies on it. Dunno why, just their policy. But there might be Sonic.

Again, more corporate policies that baffle me. Why Nintendo? What are you gaining from that?:confused: Anyway, can't wait for the next CD, whatever it may have on it.

Nintendo like to produce their own arranged soundtrack CDs, so VGL's compilation could be legitimately considered a competitor. Presumably they're holding back until they are offered a royalties deal generous enough that they wouldn't mind aiding the competition.

For better or worse, that's business. No large corporation is above it.

Songbird
03-31-2009, 04:43 PM
I know this is probably a heck no, but would VGL ever consider releasing separate CD’s; like a Nintendo version or a Square Enix version? I know it sounds preposterous, but what if that was the only way?

Swish
03-31-2009, 04:53 PM
That would be even less viable than producing the current compilations.

Companies would be essentially approving the release of competitor products they could easily release themselves. They'd make far more money doing what they normally do without VGL as a kind of middle-man.

Brainiac
03-31-2009, 05:11 PM
It would also eat into VGL's profits by having multiple versions. Even if produced in smaller quantities, each version would cost more to produce overall and get a smaller return since many consumers would only buy one version. In terms of pure economics, it makes no sense for either the companies or VGL.

That being said, however, I've a notion in the back of my head that some of the better known classics are more likely to be making an appearance on the Vol. 2 CD, however I've no evidence at the current moment to substantiate this claim...

Fingers crossed though...

I still haven't got 200 posts!

Anyway, I think that due to the first volume's lack of classics, the second one surely must have. Really, the only classic in Volume One was Castlevania, and Kororinpa was far too short!

Considering the sales of the first volume, I'm sure Nintendo will likely back the second volume (or let's hope).

I'd imagine it was Disney; S-E said no to FF, I think. They could have mellowed though; I know PLAY! has visuals for Super Mario RPG and Kingdom Hearts (but nothing from Chrono or FF).

I wish Super Mario RPG music were represented at VGL. Even without the visuals (I'm guessing Square Enix wouldn't allow that either).

Actually, given that the only input Square had on SMRPG was, as far as I know, the RPG engine, the rest (including all the characters) was from Nintendo, I believe that SE wouldn't have the authority to outright ban it, instead we'd have to get permission from Nintendo, which would be much easier I'd imagine!

You sure about that Myrph? I was under the impression it was a development largely outsourced to Squaresoft, Miyamoto supervision notwithstanding.

I was under the same impression.

Jakesnke17
04-29-2009, 10:29 AM
So, besides the RPG engine there was more input from Squaresoft on the development on Super Mario RPG? What else exactly did Squaresoft do?

Terraguy
04-29-2009, 10:31 AM
According to how I see it, Squaresoft basically had the freedom to do whatever, as long as it was faithful to the Mario franchise.

But i'm most likely wrong. Anyone else know?

Swish
04-29-2009, 12:02 PM
It's certainly not (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_chronicles) unheard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill_5) of (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroid_prime) for companies to outsource their major franchises, you know. Squaresoft were the market leaders in JRPGs at the time, so whosever idea it was, it was primarily Squaresoft's game.

Brainiac

Square does still have control of the unique characters, I believe. When Geno had a cameo in Superstar Saga, the credits included "Regardless of the above-mentioned, the copyright of Character "Geno", reserved by SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD." It's also why the spiritual successors like Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi have never been called Super Mario RPG 2. Apparently, Square must be involved for an official sequel.

Well, considering Square Enix doesn't lend out permission for most other things...that's probably the case. Still, I don't see what the harm is if they let one song onto SSBB. Anyone know what really happened or is this just rumors for now?

RedPhoenix32
05-02-2009, 01:37 PM
How about this... How about Nintendo stops being a whiny brat about everything and lets them use their music, most of which the dont even care about, in the cd's?

I mean, they dont even deserve consent, much less 10% profit, for ripping off gamers everywhere.

Hey, do you think that in the new VGL CD they might include the full Halo Suite? Perhaps maybe Halo ODST?

(B.T.W: Sorry for my long absence, but it feels great to be back!) :)

Myrph
05-10-2009, 08:12 PM
I'd say this would be rather unlikely, given that they already had some Halo on the first album. Unless they find themselves in the awkward position of being short of material for the second album, its possible this might happen, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for it.

Terraguy
05-10-2009, 09:55 PM
I agree with Myrph. It's highly unlikely that they would do such a thing, considering the inclusion of part of the Halo suite already in Volume 1.

Songbird
05-11-2009, 01:22 AM
I kind of figure they wouldn’t do it. I just happen to like the Pale Horse song and wondered if they might include the songs from Halo 3 besides the one that’s in it already; not that I have a problem with that song of course!

Myrph

Swish
05-22-2009, 09:34 AM

Sarcasm aside, I agree music with lyrics should be accompanied with appropriate transcriptions and translations.

So, back on-topic...which is odd, since this whole thread is off-topic for the forum...did any new info on Volume 2 get revealed at the post-E3 concert?

And no, I didn't post this to have lead post for all four forums. At least, not entirely. :D

Terraguy
06-05-2009, 06:59 PM
Nope. The only new thing revealed was a VGL-branded MP3 player.

Brainiac
06-05-2009, 07:45 PM
Really? Do you know what manufacturer? Any special features (other than the VGL-brand)?

Terraguy
06-05-2009, 11:21 PM
Um, I didn't really look at it (was pressed for time, so I kind of ran by the booth). All I know was that it was selling for about $80, and I think it included VGL: Volume 1.

Leontendo
06-08-2009, 07:45 PM
So... while we patiently wait for volume 2, it seems that Japan is only getting their first volume in a month! It appears to have the same tracks as the English version. (http://www.emimusic.jp/artist/st/?id=54804) Interestingly, VGMdb also has information on the album (http://vgmdb.net/album/13675). What's this?

Products represented:
* The Legend of Zelda
* Warcraft
* Civilization 4
* Final Fantasy
* Advent Rising
* Tron
* Sonic the Hedgehog
* Myst
* Super Mario Bros.
* Mario
* Halo
* Final Fantasy VII

Hmmm... that certainly looks different from the back of the album cover I've got! Let's take a look at the tracks (badly translated from Japanese by myself):

1. The Legend of Zelda Suite
2. Warcraft Suite
3. Civilization IV Medley
4. Final Fantasy Piano
5. Advent Rising Suite
6. Tron Montage
7. Sonic the Hedgehog Suite
8. Myst Medley
9. Super Mario Bros. Suite
10. Mario Piano
11. Halo Suite
12. Final Fantasy One Winged Angel (LIVE)

(bold indicates tracks not on other album)

Now, that's some news! I'm going to assume that there's some truth in this. After all, there is a lot of detail in this tracklist and that detail must have come from somewhere. I'm still confused about what it says on EMI's page, but maybe they're releasing two albums on one day? Either way, if this album is released, it would be good to see Nintendo and Square-Enix putting their awesome music on a compilation album.

Terraguy
06-08-2009, 10:13 PM
That's definitely news. Looks like SE and Nintendo/Sega are comfortable with their home audiences.

Myrph
06-08-2009, 10:49 PM
Nope, that list is old news... That was the original proposed/leaked track list for the first CD before VGL ran into issues with Nintendo, Sega and SquareEnix. If you look back to an earlier post of mine on the 'When is the next CD being released' thread (can't link now, i'm typing this on my mobile) you'll find an identical list with the same tracks in bold, but to highlight those which were removed due to copyright issues! Sorry to burst your bubble, but that track list means nothing!

EDIT: Dang phone won't let me edit my original post... The actual thread name is "When will VideoGamesLive come out with a new cd?" or something very similar to that. I think its an old thread in the general questions board... Anyone kind enough to link, it would be appreciated!

Terraguy
06-10-2009, 10:40 PM
Hmm... that's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how much that would take off. The problem is that podcasts can be quite lax when it comes to subscriptions/purchases and would also cause quite some legal issues concerning licensing.

Not that it couldn't be done, but I'd think hitting up more concerts or a DVD to come before podcasting...maybe....

Well guys, for those of you interested in that MP3 player, the main site has a news article about it.

https://www.videogameslive.com/index.php?story=214

In it, it states that there are never berfore heard pieces. There truly is only one new piece (Mass Effect Montage), while many of the others are from the VGL CD, except most of them are, instead, live (while some of the pieces live on the CD are not on the MP3 player).

Yes and no... it depends on what you like. I, for one, love live albums. I love hearing how the crowd reacts to certain tunes and specific parts of some songs. I see it as a boost of extra energy to the music ;)

But that's me...

Terraguy

I actually prefer both. If it's going to be a live album, I'd really like to hear the underlying crowd and the energy.

However, I also love studio-recorded pieces, because they sound so pure then. Plus, they make great pieces to play as background/thinking music.

I look forward to seeing you more around the forum, feel free to make any suggestions as to how we can improve the show, be it music or other aspects of the show, we love to hear everyone's opinions on these things!
If you've got any questions about anything, either shoot me a PM or post a new topic in the relevant forum and someone will do their best to answer it for you!

See? That's so much better. :p

I should have said "official" intro then.

Wow! Both welcomes are warm and very much appreciated! As to being a musician my theory treining only went so far so I'm slow at reading music sheets, but traditionally I am a singer as I was in choir during high school and did continue with some voice lessons afterwards. Of course, I'm not claiming to sound awesome or anything. Other than that, I like to play songs by ear on my sweet potato ocarina. (not really good at that yet)

I have a better intro? I feel as if I've got to meet certain standards now! How awkward! :p

Okay, here it goes with the better intro :D

Personally can't wait for the VGL vol. 2 CD to be released, and if there is any news on the matter, it will most likely appear here first, so keep your eyes peeled!

Gee Myrph, you never gave me an "Official Greeting." :p Just teasing.

Anyways, glad to have you aboard Suicunerider! :)

I'm sure that if you decided to say "Hi, I'm new" when you first joined, I probably would've put a short welcome (assuming you joined after I was made mod), else I might not have!

Happy Belated Welcome to the VGL Forums Songbird (and everyone else who will now complain), hope you enjoy your time here ;p

<snort> And the post count padding begins.

And yes, I'm aware of the irony of making a post about post count padding. :D

Hmm...makes you wonder. Who welcomed us? (As in the people who've been here since the beginning.)
