That was really one of the best things i've experienced in my life, Jack Wall was brilliant, Norihiko Hibino-san's performance of snake eater was amazing, Tommy Tallarico was full of energy, fun to watch, & a great guitarist, the National symphony Orchestra was so fun to listen to, and last but not least, Laura ''Flute Link'' Intravia, my favourite part of the show was her performance as Flute Link, I became a fan almost instantly when she sang for the God of War theme, but when she played as Flute Link really sealed the deal.
It was fun, filled with energy & excitement, I hope you guys come back again with an even better way to excite us! If possible, bring Miss Laura again, & that amazing Michael Leung guy i saw on youtube!

It's been years i did reviews for classical music, folks at Gate of Annwyn still remember that. This is VGL and i need to write something about it. It started in end of January when news about VGL coming to Malaysia surfaced, i try hard finding confirmation through bunch of contacts and finally it is confirm. The second day the ticket counter opens, i went to buy the tickets. The system at Rock Records crash & online transaction also goes to a halt. While waiting for this i randomly ask four of my friends to join, they agree with a few terms but that's okey with me. I just wanna share VGL with this four person even i have to forget about getting RM103 tickets and the opt for RM83 tickets. Some says the tickets are too expensive, hell no, try compared that to the cost of transport & accommodation last time when VGL performed in Singapore. I waited them for more than 3 years & I wouldn't miss it for the world.
Fast forward to a week before performance. There is a sudden urge that i should ask more people to come for VGL. I even join the Twitter contest to help costumer friends to have the chance to attend but my effort was misunderstood, so i stop joining the contest at the end of day one to be fair to all contestant. I send VGL links to all of the people i knew in FB, syukur when some of them replied and show interest to come. One of it is Edlin, and his effort to get the tickets a few day before performance really paid of on stage (proud of you bro!).
Few days before performance as i was busy studying Video Games music, few things happened that really caught me off guard. That's why i only help buy only four tickets, more than that will lead to this chaos. Until the last few hour before performance, there is still issues of confusions on tickets. To sum it all up, i lost my rm49 costuming glove & with the help of friends, they help me bought a new one and cut away unwanted parts. (really appreciate that guys and always make sure to end a call first. LOL)
When i arrived at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, it was raining, parking problems & bad traffic. I walk to Kinokunia to find a gold ink pen for Tommy for my secret mission. I meet my friends, register at the booth (by now i knew only 10 contestant sign up, where are the hundreds of cosplayer that we saw in CF go?) and all of us start gearing up for costume contest. Cameras are flashing like mad even before i had chance to put batteries into my lightsaber (thanks FUUri for helping). Later we were guide backstage and briefed by Brian and Allen. All of us went on stage, introduce ourself, i lost, Edlin won and we went out of the stage. I heard voices: "That's it?", "That was fast" and "They called that a cosplay contest?". While we are walking back to our seat, the show has started. I missed the Michael Jackson Tribute and entered the hall when Donkey Kong was climbing the stairs. I suggest next year the cosplay contest organizer could start the contest earlier so we can have 10-15min to get out of costume or to walk back to our seats.
The show started, Tommy charmed the audience with his opening speech and he said 'sorry' to Malaysian fan because didn't come here first. We have a great laugh when he said some people say video games is the cause of violence and someone from the audience shout "Kill those people!". Then Tommy & Jack gets the ball rolling with non-stop hard core video games music experience. I was screaming my brain out of excitement by now and regret that i should attend the 2:30pm show too!
Jaws were scattered on the floor when vocals by Laura Intravia shook the entire hall for 'God of War'. Everybody laugh at the MGS performance that have a living box on the stage. Norihiko Hibino mesmerize with his MGS3:'Snake Eater' title track with his magical saxophone performance replacing Cynthia Harrell voice. Laura Intravia again makes the crowd (mostly guys) goes wild by wearing a Link costume with a winged sphere attached to represent Navi for her solo flute performance.
In between that roller coaster ride, i got time to relax and breath properly when Tommy invite two lucky contestant to play "virtual" 'Alien Invaders' and 'Guitar Heroes' but who am i to say i can rest on it? I was shouting 'JUMP!' to Van Halen's Guitar Heroes challenge to cheer Victor Chan.
Now back to the serious stuff. There's a few performance that really got me into an emotional journey. First it was when the choir sang "SEGA!!!" on 'Sonic The Hedgehog', It just brings chill to my spine. Then there is 'Legend Of Zelda', the soundtrack is so familiar that it's part of your humming heart. 'Super Mario' medley, the last part before the orchestra stop where the scene Mario meet Princess Peach, i go : "Awww.....!". Starting from Jack asked the entire hall to say 'Kingdom Hearts' till the last image of Mickey on the steamboat; my head was cramped with ideas for a wonderful stage performance if VGL come again to Malaysia next year. Tommy surprise the audience by bringing 88 years old Ralph H. Baer, The Father of Video Games via Skype, the crowd goes silence to hear the conversation between Ralph & Tommy, a silence that followed by thunderous clap saying thank you to Ralph for changing the lives of every soul in the hall and the entire world. By the time Tommy & Jack performed 'Halo', my hand was numb because i clapped so hard.
When Tommy announce 'FF7: One Winged Angel', i really go berserk, i was screaming & cheering, i was singing "Sepiroth!" and threw all the manly macho shit out the window as i cried countless time! For me, this is the best soundtrack ever written for a game with a marvelous mix of vocals, orchestral and a guitar solo in between. For years it's been a favorite in my lappy playlist. To hear it played live in front of me with images of cosplayer on the screen really touched my heart.
After shouting 'we want more!' & 'encore', Tommy & Jack return with 'Castlevania' and at one point, it make your hair stand up on the back of your neck as Tommy's geniously conveyed the most impossible part of Castlevania track through the magnificent sound of his guitar. Later Jack, Laura & Norihiko joined forces for a final showdown with 'Chrono Cross'. The night ended with a big bang, the crowd was on their feet with giant applause.
While queuing up for autograph session with Tommy, Jack, Laura & Norihiko, I met with cosplayer friends who where shocked that the queue goes almost half a circle around the KL Convention Center's escalator and elevator area. They got panicked and asked will they stop taking signature halfway? Will Tommy and friends be so nice to meet each of the fans? My answer to the person who i wanted the most to experience VGL together is: "One day i really wish i could be like Tommy Tollarico, a person who have a childhood dream by recording music at video arcades, giving us more than 250 games to enjoy, left 'Reviews on the Run' to concentrate on VGL and to share his passion on beautiful music of video games with the whole world. Trust me, he will meet you and shake your hand."
That what Tommy, Jack, Laura & Norihiko did, it's almost midnight and they still continue to meet each and everyone of the fans and gave their signature on every piece of paper and some weird request to sign it on PS2 & Sega Saturn. I'm really honored to have meet Tommy, Jack, Laura & Norihiko and ask them to come back to Malaysia soon. I would love to thank Dato Zulkifli Ishak for bringing VGL to our soil and making this one of the greatest day of my life. Finally have to apologize to friends who couldn't understand why i'm so excited to the point of annoying about sharing the VGL experience and to the person who sat directly infront of me, sorry if i damaged your eardrum.
