I wonder why they don't release Doraemon games outside Japan.
Back in the days, the anime it was a success, at least in here and Spain.

Could someone enlighten me who Doraemon is please; I've seen the character before, but don't know much about him.

Doraemon is a Japanese manga and anime charater for children.
He's a 22nd century robot cat with a somewhat tragic creation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWtStvVNZ_E), that returns to the past (present), bored of the future. He becomes friend of a japanese kid named Nobita Nobi, from a lower class family.
Nobita lacks academic and physical skills, but is good hearted, and soon, he and Doraemon become best friends, actually, more like brothers.
Basically the series are about the adventures and misadventures of the two friends and their friends. Doraemon pulls out every kind of gadgets from his "magic" pocket, from a time machine (witch is kept on Nobita's desk's draw) to a flying hat.
Once again, the series are aimed for children, but they caught the attention of a wider age group, like happened with some historical characters, like Mickey.
There is a Wiki (http://doraemon.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) that you can consult, but I recomend take a look at the series if you can.

When I was a kid, I used to watch the 1979 anime. There is a newer version that started in 2005, wich I can't say much, for I haven't seen it. The first anime series are from 1973 and the original manga date back from 1969.

I dunno since when, but one of the TV stations here in my country keeps playing reruns the old gen episodes of Doraemon..
And personally though, I prefer the old than the new..
There's something bout 20th century 'toons that makes them irreplaceable, evident in sequels based on the original are always a flop (some are quite good, on rare occasions, but still not quite as good as the its predecessor) like those Disney classics sequels or like don stated, the new Doraemon series/movies..

I agree with you. I think a lot of cartoons from the 90's and earlier were really good (of course, we also had some really bad ones, but hey, it happens :D). I think I actually appreciate some shows like Animaniacs and Tiny Toon Adventures even more now than I did when I first watched them. Even the cartoons for really little kids used to have better plots instead of the completely structured stuff they throw at kids now. Kids aren't stupid, they understand storylines.
Although some gems do still come around. A show like Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender set a standard for what more cartoons should be like now, in my opinion.

I won't really talk about anime, since I don't know enough about them to judge how they are or how they've changed.

I was quite surprised that Avatar turned out really good, the best series I've seen in a long time though I can't help but to think why was the plot so engaging and quite complex (though not to the point of Inception complex) for a kid's show..
Also, it wondered me why did the animators use eastern style drawings instead of western..maybe they thought anime was popular with the kids, or it fits the Orient theme of the series, I dunno..its just that I felt somewhat weird watching a western cartoon in the style of eastern drawings..
